Lynchburg Hosiery Mill (09811)
An undated photo of Lynchburg Hosiery Mill located on Fort Avenue in Lynchburg, VA. The Lynchburg Hosiery Mill was opened in 1899 by Joseph Godber Burton, a knitter from Nottingham, England. Burton arrived in Rhode Island in 1884 as the first superintendent of the state’s British Hosiery Company. In 1899, the company expanded its operations to Lynchburg, naming the new office the Midland Hosiery Company. It first opened on 14th Street and Stephenson Ave. In 1900, it was renamed the Lynchburg Hosiery Mill and moved to its current location on Fort Avenue. The mill closed in 1972 and currently consists of office space and apartments. There are several more buildings on the site than are shown here.
