William Marvin Bass Elementary School VI (06102)
This photo, identified by the Lynchburg School Board as William Marvin Bass Elementary School construction activity. Image shows early site preparation for the bridge providing access to the school. Bill Collins, who grew up in this neighborhood, said in 2011, that the old walls in background were all that remained of what neighbors thought was a defunct black college which were demolished for construction of William Marvin Bass Elementary. The boys who played in the area called it "The Old Rock College" for lack of any specific information. It was the remains of The Virginia Collegiate and Industrial Institute (1893-1917). This college would have been located on Campbell Courthouse Road in South Lynchburg and was a branch of Morgan College in Baltimore, MD. It was of greenstone construction and had dormitories, classrooms, dining room, reception area, library, and a chapel open for Sunday services. Morgan's "Annex" was an institution of higher education founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church, North and supported and nurtured by Lynchburg's Jackson Street Methodist Episcopal Church.
