View of James River from Riverside Park Overlook (03005)
The James River runs from Iron Gate in the West, through Richmond, and empties into the Chesapeake Bay at Newport News in the East. The James River reaches Lynchburg about 75 miles into its course. Access to this fast route to the large markets in Richmond made Lynchburg a prosperous tobacco town in the mid-19th century by using the James River-Kanawha Canal. For that reason, the C&O Railroad constructed the James River Division, following the old tow path. This made for a more level route to Richmond. (The original title of the postcard was misleading. The Boat Club was down on the river).
